If you’ve ever lurked on a community Facebook group for any amount of time, you’ve seen at least one person requesting photographer suggestions. Cue ALL the names! Whew! Even I grow anxious looking at the list because girl, it is LONG! So while you’re sorting through all of the comments, here’s 5 important questions to ask your photographer candidates that you may not have thought of:
1. How do you prepare for the session? This will let you know about any prep work your photographer may provide, such as guides for wardrobe choices, makeup tips, or how to prepare for the day. These resources can help you have a stress free session and are very helpful!
2. How long will it take to receive your images? Ask about the turnaround time for receiving proofs and/or final images, and make sure that those dates or time periods are listed in the session agreement.
3. Do you offer digital and print options? Find out if you can purchase digital files, prints, or products like albums and canvases to display your portraits. If your photographer only offers digitals, then you’ll be on your own for product layout, design, material sourcing, and printing which can be overwhelming. If products are important to you, choose a photographer who offers both.
4. How many images can we expect to see? Understanding how many final images you will receive and in what format (digital gallery, prints, etc.) helps set expectations. Again, make sure that these aspects are in your session agreement.
5. Are there additional fees or costs? It’s important for you to understand the photographer’s pricing structure, including whether there are session fees, travel costs, or add-on packages. You do not want any surprise fees lurking around the corner at the end of your session.
